Manual fsck through initramfs - How do I run it automatically?

One of the systems I have Ubuntu installed on may sometimes hang, forcing me to restart it with SysRq REISUB, or with the reset button. I'm sure there's an underlying problem, but I'll ignore that for now.
The issue with this particular system is that when such an event happens, it will not let me go past initramfs until fsck has been run manually to fix a few files, which so far, have been nothing but cache files from Firefox.
Now, I know how to run this manually. What I want to know is why can't it be done automatically. It seems to work automatically on another old system I have, which further confuses me. Is there an option to enable automatic checks and fixing of problematic files?
boot initramfs fsck
