You may not install any dialer. Follow the steps below:
- Go to Network Management --> Mobile Broadband
- If the driver name is not visible then click on "Add" and follow instructions till you reach the tab where you are asked to enter login credentials
- Enter numer as "#777", user id and password are the 10 digit phone number given to you.
Cheers!
tried this, didn't worked. I don't really know why but didn't worked.

This is HowTo using wvdial instead of NetworkManager
plug in the dongle and in terminal run
$ sudo wvdialconf
this identifies the modem device file and various modem properties like baude rate for u and updates /etc/wvdial.conf
Now
$ sudo vi /etc/wvdial.conf
and give username and password which are both ur modem phone number and destination phone no #777
to dial
Username = 9393209369
Password = 9393209369
Phone = #777
Now dial
$ wvdial
Thats it. *Make sure u got sufficient balance else recharge it.
didn't work, executing the cli 'wvdialconf' results in error "Sorry no modem is was detected!". but lsusb shows the device as mentioned in the question.

Then the fault is with modem drivers. Linux community might not yet updated itself with ur modem driver. Anyway U should try updating ubuntu preferably to 13.04. If u got drivers cd with linux drivers try installing them but u should have luck not breaking ModemManager. If u break ModemManager u got to re-install NetworkManager.

I have had this issue. I use a reliance netconnect dongle. What I did was, access a windows machine, change the dongle setting to hybrid, reboot into ubuntu and run sudo wvdialconf
wvdial detected the modem and generated the conf. Then I modified the conf with the username and password. Then run wvdial
.
That worked.
