poor error reporting with C compiler

If I don't declare a variable, for example, the error message is something like
in function ' '
etc.
That is, the particular function containing the error is not specified.
This makes locating the error (in code with many functions) tedious.

Please show an actual example. Usually the compiler shows the line number where the error occured.
