ERROR : Unable to find display on any available system

basically the same issue as the one described here: https://ashttps://askubuntu.com/questions/1087827/nvidia-wayland-ubuntu-18-04-unable-to-find-display-on-any-available-systemkubuntu.com/questions/1087827/nvidia-wayland-ubuntu-18-04-unable-to-find-display-on-any-available-system
except I am using nvidia-396 driver.
When I enter nvidia-settings into the Terminal, the only output is this :
ERROR : Unable to find display on any available system
edit: output of
sudo startx
gives
