Ubuntu 16.04 - Inconsistent Ethernet Adapter Activity

I'm experiencing odd network interface behavior in a clean install of Ubuntu 16.04. I never experience any connectivity problems on the Ubuntu box itself. I am always able to reach out to the other machines on my lan and I'm always able to get out to the internet.
I do notice when trying to ssh or ping from my Mac to the ubuntu machine, that sometimes I am unable to reach the ubuntu machine. The request just times out. As soon as I ping google.com on the ubuntu machine, I am able to then ping from the Mac to the ubuntu machine. It seems like the network card goes to "sleep" and the only thing that wakes it is interesting traffic from the ubuntu machine itself.
Based on other posts, I tried using the r8168 driver but using that driver, I was never able to get any sort of network connectivity. DHCP was able to assign the IP but I was not able to reach out to my lan or the internet.
