OpenVPN on Ubuntu 14.04 - after a while it breaks the network connection

I have a virtual machine on a QNAP NAS that runs Ubuntu 14.04. It's connected via OpenVPN to an Expressvpn vpn server.
It works for a while but at some point the VM loses its ability to communicate with the internet AND with local LAN resources. It looks connected (both VPN and local lan) but there's no connectivity/data transfer.
The only way I found so far to restore connectivity is to disconnect ethernet/lan and connect it again. I may understand that the VPN connection goes stale/dead at some point (even though it of course shouldn't), but I don't understand why the local lan connection also "dies".
If I just leave the VM without VPN connected, the lan connection doesn't die, so the problem is somehow related to OpenVPN.
Any ideas?
EDIT: I have found that I can wake up/restore network connectivity by restarting the network-manager service. Does that help?
