How to switch to Console/tty in Ubuntu 18.10?
I need to exit GUI / MATE and go to the terminal to remove/install the
nouveau/nvidia graphics driver. How can I do this in Ubuntu 18.10, Ctrl+Alt+F1...F6 does not work (complete black screen), although Ctrl+Alt+F7 still can brought back to GUI... (seems this is already an issue in 18.04..)

if the screen does not appear when pressing control+alt+f1 you have a problem with your graphics driver. Try to switch to the open source/closed source version depending on what you use now and see if is works then.

the driver seems fine, lshw -c video | grep 'configuration' returns: configuration: driver=nvidia latency=0

Your tty's are not showing so no it is not fine. I would suggest switching display driver and see if the tty's are shown then. See for instance askubuntu.com/questions/565953/… but there are a lot more: like askubuntu.com/questions/162535/… Try to not use the nomodeset option cuz that introduces other problems.
