2018 Q4 ubuntu controller plague

I can't be the only one affected by this.

after certain updates I'm not savvy enough to isolate, some controllers have stopped working under ubuntu 18.04.01.

Generic xbox 360 inspired gamepads still work but that's the only thing.

Support for ps4 and official xbox 360 as well as pnp xbox one lookalike and xbobx one has disappeared. (all involved controllers tested again under windows to make sure they are not the problem)

I'm asking a question here to find out why.

I tried installing xboxdrv but this has resulted in the loss of all controller detection.

what can I do to fix universal controller plag-and-play which I used to have and took great advantage of during my many lan parties.
