Ubuntu 18.04 not resolving dns?

I recently updated from 16 to 18, since when I have not been able to connect to the internet. It's a desktop machine without a wireless adapter. Firefox can't connect to any website. If I open a terminal and ping "google.com" it returns 'Name or service not known'. If I ping 8.8.8.8 it works fine.
I am more or less a complete linux noob so any ideas / suggestions would be greatfully received
