What is the maximum age of cats?

My cat is four years old now. Someone told me that cats do not have a long life span. This made me so sad and worried. I want to know what is the approximate age of cats if they are fit and healthy.

The current Guinness World Record for longest-lived domestic cat belonged to Creme Puff, who lived to be 38 (1967 - 2005). The typical lifespan for indoor domestic cats is estimated at ~15 years.

Life expectancy depends on many things, including one important factor - whether your cat is an indoor-only cat or an outdoor cat. Indoor cats generally live from 12-18 years of age. Many may live to be in their early 20s. The oldest reported cat lived to be an amazing 28 years old.

You could also improve this answer by telling us not just the life expectancy of indoor cats but also that of outdoor cat and why it is usually different (you didn't even tell us if outdoor cats live longer or shorter, just that it's "an important factor").

But I agree, the answer would be improved by more discussion of outdoor life expectancy.

The 16-18 year old cats. I've had cats all my life , well they are family pets. We have never had a cat live past 20yrs. Although it is definitely not rare. I recently got an Egyptian Mau full blooded. I was told his lifespan was 20 plus. Just a little more info on a possible difference in mixed or full blooded. Mostly lived inside.
