  • Battery drain when HP laptop is shut down from Ubuntu, but not from Windows

I am using an HP G72 laptop running Ubuntu 16.04 (all updates applied) and the battery discharges even when shut down.

The older battery would lose 15% in 24 hours and the new battery loses only 8% in 24 hours.

The exception to this is if I remove the battery and reinstall without rebooting, then the battery does not discharge. I use the command line sudo shutdown -P now also the power statistics show the battery voltage (assume is battery) as 0 volts.

Any suggestions? I get the same results (just different %) with a battery that is several years old or a new battery still does the same. A new battery charges to the full power (Wh) indicated in the power statistics.

Most probably you have wake-on-LAN enabled.
