wifi not working on dell inspiron 15 5000 series with ubuntu 14.04

I just installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my laptop in dual boot mode and cannot get the wifi working. I have tried different backporting solutions suggested on the forums but either they have broken links (most are 2 year old posts).
I did find this answer that is from 2018 but it didn't work either:
- Wifi not working (Intel) on HP Spectre x360 13
Is there any current working backporting reference guide that I can try or any other way to approach this?
I have found chili555 posts and answers as the most helpful but they did not do the trick for me :)
WiFi card:
- qualcom atheros QCA9377 on pci slot
- kernel version: 4.8.14-040814-generic
- software blocking: no
Thanks for helping!
